Hazardous Location Construction For Liquid Filling Machines

The flammable nature of certain liquids, including solvent based products, some chemicals, and more, can create certain challenges for packagers when preparing them for their customers. The moving parts and electronics of an automated filling system can create the potential for sparks, arcs, or other ignition events. Even where the products themselves may not be flammable, the packaging floor may include a hazardous atmosphere that requires protection against the igniting of fumes or other environmental risks. In these circumstances, the construction of a filling machine for a hazardous environment provides the necessary protection against these unwanted events.

At Liquid Packaging Solutions, we offer hazardous location construction tailored to the packaging environment. Enclosures and connections on these machines comply with NFPA Standards, Class I, Div I, Groups C & D. For certain projects, safeguards may be taken to follow even more stringent NFPA standards, including remote access control panels and additional enclosures as necessary. An analysis of each project can be done on a case-by-case basis to ensure both optimal safety and efficiency for the liquid filler.

But even when built for hazardous locations, liquid fills can be completed for different viscosities using different filling principles. Overflow fillers can be used to prepare thinner liquids and fill by level. Gravity fillers provide an economical volumetric fill for lower viscosities. When preparing thicker products, pump and piston filling machines offer businesses different options to safely and efficiently move the liquid. In most cases, options including drip trays, neck grabbers, and other alternatives also remain available on machines manufactured for these locations.

For other projects, chemicals may also be corrosive to Stainless Steel, the construction material most often used for filling equipment. LPS offers HDPE construction of liquid fillers to fight against corrosion, again offering not only safe and efficient filling, but a longer machine life.
