Chuck Cappers for Unique Caps

Chuck capping machines are often used for typical flat, screw on type closures.  These typical caps are found on bottled water and many beverages like popular soft drinks.  But many products use a different version of a screw on type cap, such as sports caps, tall caps or large diameter closures.  For these unique screw on caps, the chuck capper can still produce consistent and reliable tightening.

 

 

Some products use a screw on type cap that is simply taller than the typical cap found on many beverages.  An example of this type of cap may be found on some shampoo bottles (these may also be flip-top type caps, another variation of the screw on type closure).  The standard chuck and chuck insert may not be able to descend far enough to stabilize and apply torque to these taller closures.  In these cases, the chuck, and the chuck insert if one is used, will be fabricated with an extended depth cover more area of the cap and ensure the reliability and consistency that are expected and necessary to tighten the lids.

 

 

Sports caps are used mainly for, well, sports drinks.  Many of these beverages may be sold in squeeze bottle type packages.  The top of the bottle will look like a nozzle that will pop in and out of place to allow the drink inside to be released, but the cap itself will still screw on to the bottle threads.  In most cases, the solution for using a chuck capper on sports caps will consist on hollowing out the rubber chuck insert to fit the shape and size of the sports cap itself.  Hollowing out the insert simply allows for the correct grip on the cap to apply torque and again reach a consistent and reliable tightening process.

 

 

Some items that are packaged in plastic jars or other larger containers may be sealed with a large diameter chuck cap.  For instance, peanuts, cashews and other nuts will often come in a larger container with a screw on type cap.  These caps are usually very similar to teh typical flat caps described above, only wider.  These lids are handled by the chuck capping machine using a larger, sometimes custom fabricated chuck and chuck insert (though the insert may not always be used).  Other than the larger chuck and insert, chuck capping machines for large diameter closures will usually be no different from the standard machinery.

 

We refer above to the possibility of using not only a chuck, but also a chuck insert.  Chucks will usually be fabricated from brushed aluminum and will use an insert for grip and to help apply torque.  However, stainless steel chucks can also be custom fabricated for certain packaging projects, usually in the food or pharma industries.  The stainless steel chucks will be made specifically for the cap and will reduce dust and debris that can result from the rubber inserts.
